Viaclay is a set of 100 porcelain cups, handmade by one artist and fired with a white glaze.
Each vessel is unique, but all are about 6 inches tall, will hold about 12 ounces of liquid, and fit easily in your hand.
Each cup is stamped with the project website and a unique three-digit number: 001 to 100.
This website, viaclay.com, is a virtual vessel containing HOW TO instructions and a TRAVELOGUE page for capturing media.
On one day, in one location, the set of 100 cups will be displayed together and anyone will be invited to “please take one.”
The only requirement to select a free cup is to be present at the event.
The event location will be open and accessible to all. The 100 cups will be displayed and photographed together before being randomly distributed.
Each cup will contain a card with a single instruction to visit viaclay.com.
Guidelines encourage recipients to use and post photographs of their cup before giving it to someone else.
Instagram posts will automatically populate the TRAVELOGUE page of the website.
How will people select their cup and participate?
Will social media create an audience for the project that will extend the concept in ways not yet imagined?
How long will the experiment last and where will the cups travel?
